Fitness - In or Out?

I really wanted to find out which was better for me, and for the environment; running outdoors or using a treadmill in a gym? Is there any real difference between the two different types of running?

I decided that I would find some facts on the matter and some pros and cons so in the end you can make up your own mind?
I personally feel after researching and reviewing running inside and outside, I would much prefer to go running outdoors! I like the thought of just going to the gym and not having to worry about the weather, but at the same time, think of all the germs that are going around the stuffy room of a gym while people exercise. We need fresh air! Gyms are also using up way too much energy for my liking. Did you know that there are 26,000 gyms in America and 5,000 gyms in the United Kingdom? Think of all the energy being wasted when just running outdoors is clearly more energy efficient, and in this day and age, we all know that we need to be more energy efficient becasue we are running out of fuels ... fast!

DISADVANTAGES OF RUNNING INDOORS:
You might think running on  a treadmill may seem like a safer option, however,  gyms aren't entirely safe. Gyms use air conditioning to keep the temperature down; this means that any germs that are around can be sucked up and pumped back into the air for the gym-goers to breathe in. It's not a nice thought while your exercising, is it? The amount of energy gyms use up is disgraceful as well. They are extremely bad for the environment with the amount of electricity they use daily.

DISADVANTAGES OF RUNNING OUTDOORS:
If you are running out alone you would be at risk of an injury and have no one available or nearby to help. The weather is also a disadvantage of outdoor running because if it is cold and icy then it is too dangerous to run. Same as if it is particularly hot then it would be dangerous  running outside becuase you risk the chance of dehydration. Running outdoors also demands more from your body because you're moving forward in a stride.

PROS OF RUNNING INDOORS AND OUTDOORS:
Running on a treadmill is somewhat easier because the ground is moving under your feet. Many treadmills have padding on them for over-weight people or injured people, especially someone with knee problems. By running on a treadmill you have more control over your workout. Gyms offer a controlled environment that makes it easier to train all year round.
Running outdoors is good for you mind and body as the constance exposure and inhalation of fresh air helps your brain to work better and makes you feel better. It gives you more variety to do what you want each day as well.
