Here Are Some Great Ways For You To Be Eco-Friendly At Home!
By Ella Lyons
1.Prevent energy leaks at home. This will keep your home much much warmer in winter!
2. Invest in Solar energy. This would include landscaping lights or phone chargers etc.
3. Switch as many bulbs as possible in your home to compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL's) lighting is on average 25% of your electricity usage, so these bulbs will really make a difference!
4. Use a low-flow shower head. This will help conserve water in your home.
5. Start a compost pile. Read Jessica's article on composting to find out how!
6. Close the windows. When you get cold in your home, don't just turn up the heating, close the windows first!
7. Plant trees in your yard and community. These trees will help trap CO2 emissions, lowering the effect of global warming.
8. Have a shower instead of a bath. Showers are quicker and use less water, so don't waste time and water filling up the bath.
9. Use a reel or electric lawn mower. Petrol lawn mowers are very damaging to the environment, so think about switching to a cleaner electrical one.
10. Replace your single-paned windows with double glazing. This will trap the heat inside your home so you can conserve electricity by not using the central heating as much.
11. Turn off lights and electronic devices when you're not using them. No point in wasting energy on something you are not even using!
12. Fix water leaks in the bathroom, kitchen, etc. This prevents water being wasted.
13. Consider switching to a low-flow toilet. Bet you never knew that 41% of our indoor water use in the home goes towards flushing the toilet! Seems like a random thing to waste water on, so why not switch to a low flow toilet?
14. Use ceiling fans to cool off in the summer. Ceiling fans are a lot better for the environment than air conditioning, and the effect is exactly the same!
15. Use solar energy to dry your clothes. Hang your clothes up outside to dry instead of using the tumble dryer to save electricity!
16. Lower your home thermostats. Watch out for your fridge or freezer to make sure they are not at unneccessary temperatures.
17. Use public transportation. Check out the article on transport to learn what modes of transport are available.
18. Use small, efficient devices to cook food. These use less energy and won't heat up your house as much as larger appliances in summer, meaning you won't need as much A.C.
19. Use native plants in the garden. Native plants are better adapted to your area so they require less maintenance and water.
20. Get involved locally! Help others in your local community to save energy by sharing these tips!
